Energy: Hidden water use

Indoor marijuana cultivation gives growers more control over how much water is applied to plants, but there is a hidden water use: the amount needed to generate electricity to run the lighting systems.

“It’s true that growing in greenhouses is a lot less water intensive in raising plants than is growing outdoors, on the order of a factor of 10 per unit of crop produced,” said Larry Kinney, of Synergistic Building Technologies of Boulder. “That’s the good news. The bad news is that the generation of electricity itself is quite water intensive.”

Kinney is speaking in Pueblo tonight on how to grow cannabis with more energy efficiency. His presentation is at 6 p.m. at the Robert Hoag Rawlings Public Library, 100 E. Abriendo Avenue. The program is intended for cannabis growers, but other indoor growers could benefit. The Colorado Renewable Energy Society and Sustainable Pueblo are sponsoring the event.

Kinney is the co-holder of five patents relating to greenhouses and has directed research projects to demonstrate energy efficiency in large commercial greenhouses.
